Impact Of Anabolic Androgenic Steroids On Sexual Function
# Impact of Anabolic Androgenic Steroids on Sexual Function
## Abstract
This study investigates the effects of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) on sexual function, utilizing a survey of 49 users. Results indicate that higher doses of AAS correlate with worse sexual function metrics, despite enhanced libido. Participants reported significant declines in erectile function and satisfaction, suggesting potential risks beyond performance enhancement.
## Introduction
Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS), synthetic hormones mimicking testosterone, are widely used for muscle growth and performance enhancement. While their benefits are well-documented, their impact on sexual health remains understudied. This study examines how AAS use influences sexual function, focusing on like dosage and duration of use.
## Background
AAS have a history of both therapeutic use and illicit misuse, with varying regulatory statuses worldwide. Their effects on hormones like testosterone can lead to hormonal imbalances, potentially affecting sexual health. Despite these risks, their appeal persists due to perceived benefits in physical performance and muscle growth.
## Methods
The study included 49 AAS users (male, age >18) recruited through online forums. Participants completed a 49-item questionnaire assessing sexual function, including the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) and demographic details. Blood tests measured testosterone levels, and statistical analyses using regression and correlation identified relationships between AAS use and IIEF scores.
## Participants
Participants were primarily male bodybuilders or athletes, with a mean age of 28.8 years. Most reported using AAS for muscle gain (67%), with 34% citing therapeutic reasons. Testosterone usage patterns varied, with doses ranging from 300 to 1000mg weekly.
## Statistical Analyses
Regression and correlation analyses revealed significant links between AAS use and reduced IIEF scores, particularly at higher doses. Factors like dosage, duration of use, and concurrent steroid usage significantly impacted sexual function outcomes.
## Results
Table 1 outlines demographics, with most participants being male bodybuilders. Table 2 shows that AAS users reported lower IIEF scores compared to non-users. Table 3 identifies factors associated with higher or lower scores, emphasizing the role of dosage and duration.
## Discussion
The findings suggest that while AAS may enhance libido, they often impair erectile function and sexual satisfaction. This underscores the need for further research into long-term effects and potential interventions for users.
## Conclusions
AAS use is associated with negative impacts on sexual health, particularly at higher doses. While benefits like increased libido exist, their risks to erectile function and overall sexual satisfaction cannot be ignored. Further studies are needed to explore these complexities.
