The S7's sensors work in tandem to stay clear of obstacles and clean the floors. It can recognize floor types and save a map of rooms and zones. It even detects dirt levels. It's also capable of scheduling and running spot-cleaning sessions. It performed well in standard tests, but did not perform as well as the Roomba j7+ for the carpet deep cleaning test.

With the companion app you can program the S7 to perform a cleaning cycle in accordance with your schedule. You can choose a time day, week, or even a day and select from a variety of cleaning options, such as eco, automatic and deep clean. You can also choose whether the robot will stop if its power runs out or when it comes across an obstruction.

If you don't own a smartphone however, you can still utilize the S7 by connecting a remote control to its charging dock. The controls are a bit confusing at first however they are very effective once you've mastered them. However, our hands-on tests have shown that Shark's model is among the most effective self-emptying vacuums that are available. It's simple to set up and has a large bin that can be easily emptied (albeit loudly) into a trashcan once it is full. It can also be programmed to sweep the entire home on a regular basis.

The IQ XL is able to connect to your WiFi at home and allow you to track its progress on cleaning from the Shark app. The app allows you to set up a cleaning routine and also receive push notifications on its status in cleaning, pause it and then restart cleaning, or set it to a single area. You can also control it using voice commands via Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. The app will inform you the power mode it's currently in--Eco, Normal or Max--but we didn't find that any of the modes had a significant impact in cleaning performance.

After it has completed cleaning, the IQ XL automatically empties the bin into its base, which then automatically emptys itself. The bin can hold up to 60 days of debris so it won't be required to empty it more than once, unless your pets have hair that is long. If you have to empty it, you can simply detach the side container, hold it over the trash can, and then press a button.


There's not much to dislike about the Shark IQ XL, although it feels a bit less sturdy than the Roomba 694. It's good in cleaning carpeted floors however, it isn't as efficient as the iRobot Roomba i7 in terms of bare floor performance. The i7 also feels more sturdy, is more durable and requires less maintenance. It has lower recurring costs, charges faster, and offers comparable battery performance. It also has more advanced technology for automation, such as areas that are not accessible and the ability to select the rooms that should be cleaned.

4. iRobot J7+

This robot mop/vac combo is a rare beast, since it does both jobs very well. iRobot Combo j7+ has all the smarts and features similar to its j7 counterpart including LiDAR map and self-emptying. It also comes with additional features for vacuuming and mopping.

The j7+ utilizes the latest acoustic sensor to determine the type of floor which allows it to vacuum or mop the room on its first pass. This information is also used to determine the best cleaning options for rooms with carpets or rugs versus those with hard flooring.

The J7+ is quieter than the majority of robotic vacuums when it's running and is even quieter when it's mopping. The maximum reading on our decibel meter was 64db, which is comparable to the background noise of office chatter.

It's easy to set an appointment for cleaning and change the way that the j7+ operates when its dust container is full. The j7+ can be controlled using voice assistants (Alexa, Google Assistant, etc.) for a hands-free approach and the app lets you create and explore maps of your home.

The j7+ did well in our tests on both carpeted and hard floors, removing most of the dirt we tossed at it. It has some issues with pet hair and large debris such as sand, however it can clean these things with a little extra effort. It has excellent navigational capabilities and two cliff sensors to prevent it from falling down the stairs or getting caught on furniture legs.

We did notice a couple of small niggles with the j7+, mainly that it could snag cords and carpets, and it doesn't always shut off its mopping when it's done vacuuming. This is a great model that ticks off all the boxes.

The j7+ from iRobot also has one of the best self-emptying systems we've tested. It deposits its 14oz / 0.4-liter dust container into the base station where it will automatically empty itself for you. This helps reduce the amount of garbage you need to dispose of. You will only have to replace the dust disposal bag on the dock every 60 days, based on how frequently you use the j7+.
