Minecraft to aid UN regeneration projects


Minecraft is being used to model 300 locations across the world so that people can decide on how they wish to alter their lives.


Block by Block is a collaboration between Minecraft-maker Mojang, UN Habitat and the Block by Block program.


Urban locations will be recreated on computer using Minecraft allowing residents to explore their surroundings in a virtual.


They will also have the ability to alter the model and decide on where the money for regeneration should be used.


The Undugu playground, which is located in the Kibera region located on the outskirts Nairobi, was one of the first playgrounds to be recreated in Minecraft for Block by Block's pilot program.


"We'll incorporate it into the game so people can play around and feel as if it's as real life as possible," Lydia Winters, community liaison manager at Mojang told the BBC.


Undugu is being recreated on computer by Minecraft modelling firm Fyre UK. Soon those who live around the playground will be able visit it to see the plans of the United Nations to revive it.


Virtual visits


Minecraft is a world composed of cubes. Each cube is made from a distinct virtual material such as dirt, stone, iron ore, diamond, and so on. The game is played by stacking the cubes to create structures or breaking them down into their raw materials, resulting in artefacts and objects.


The ease at which the real world can be modeled in Minecraft led UN Habitat to approach Mojang to assist with its urban regeneration plans, said Ms Winters.


UN Habitat will remodel 300 areas in Minecraft by 2016. Minecraft servers Minecraft servers This will allow inhabitants of these areas to be part of the process of transformation.


"It's connecting decision makers with young people to take a decision on this common ground for public spaces all over the world," said Ms Winters.
