Minecraft And NFTs

Recently, we've received feedback from members of the community seeking clarification and clarity regarding Mojang Studios and Minecraft's position on NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and blockchain.

As we are currently working on updating our Minecraft Usage Guidelines to offer more specific guidelines on the latest technologies, we would like to use this opportunity to express our opinion that integrations of NFTs with Minecraft are not something we allow or even support. Let's look at it more closely.

WHAT IS A NFT?

An NFT is an exclusive, non-editable digital token that is part of a blockchain , and is typically purchased with cryptocurrency like Bitcoin. An NFT can be associated with any type of digital asset like an MPEG or GIF but the most commonly used usage is today with digital art, such as JPEGs. The purchase of an NFT gives you the certificate that proves ownership of the original digital file. However any digital file can be copied, deleted or moved. Blockchain and NFTs have also been associated with speculation, in which prices rise rapidly and as we have recently observed, they can fall quickly.

How will this affect me?

If you're a player or creator who is actively involved in the buying, selling or trading of NFTs which make use of Minecraft (like worlds or skins), we strongly suggest that you read the guidelines below. If you don't the above, these changes won't affect your game.

Our NFT POLICY AND MINECRAFT

In our Minecraft Usage Guidelines, we outline how a server owner can charge users for access, and how everyone should have access to the same functions. These rules are in place to ensure that Minecraft remains a community where everyone has access to the same content. NFTs however, could create models of scarcity and exclusion that do not conform to our guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft.

Blockchain technology is not permitted to be integrated into our client and server apps. Additionally, blockchain technology cannot be integrated into Minecraft game-related content such as skins, worlds, and other items be utilized by blockchain technology to create a precious digital asset. These are the reasons that we have.

NFT implementations have been announced by various companies that can be linked to Minecraft world skin pack and files. Other examples of how NFTs and blockchain can be utilized with Minecraft include creating Minecraft collectible NFTs that allow players to earn NFTs through activities performed on a server, or earning Minecraft NFT rewards for activities outside of the game.

Each of these uses for NFTs and other Blockchain technologies results in digital ownership that is dependent on scarcity or the exclusion of. This is not in the spirit of Minecraft values of creative inclusion, playing together, and sharing resources. NFTs are not inclusive of our community and create a situation of the haves and have-nots. NFTs encourage profiteering and speculative pricing which we believe is incompatible with long-term joy and success for our players.

We are also concerned about third-party NFTs not being secure and could end up costing the customers who buy them. Third-party NFT implementations could also be dependent on blockchain technology. They may need an asset manager who can disappear without notice. There have been instances where NFTs were sold at artificially or fraudulently overvalued prices. We are aware of the value of creating in our game and aim to create a marketplace where these values are acknowledged.

As such, to ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated into our Minecraft client and server applications nor may be used to create NFTs that are associated with any in-game content, including skins, worlds and other items, or any other mods. We will also monitor the development of blockchain technology in the future to ensure that the above principles are not infringed upon and to determine if it could provide more secure experiences or other practical, inclusive applications in gaming. We don't plan to integrate blockchain technology into Minecraft at this time.

We hope to have more to share with you in the near future. In the meantime If you're interested in learning more on our guidelines you can find them here. Keep an eye out!
