World of Warcraft Developers Weigh The Mobile Gaming App

World of Warcraft developers weigh mobile gaming apps

21 March 2012

World of Warcraft's creators have confirmed that they are looking into porting the game to mobile devices.

Eurogamer interviewed Blizzard Entertainment about the link between a decline in subscribers and the launching of a Star Wars-themed competitor title.

In November, the company announced that WoW had 10.3 Million subscribers, down from 12 million in 2010.

Others have attempted to make WoW work on Android devices, but an official launch could boost Blizzard's earnings.

To date the firm has only released a no-cost Mobile Armoury app to allow players to keep their character's progress and plan their adventures.

Eurogamer was informed by John Lagrave, a senior producer at the developer of the game, that the primary reason why his team had not released a mobile game that allowed gameplay was due to the issues with condensing the interface.

He said that he was looking into the possibility of finding an excellent method to play WoW on the phone.

"The world is moving towards a small handheld device... It would be foolish for any game developer not to be watching this, and we are not. We don't think that we're foolish."

Competition

Mr Lagrave also said that the number of people paying a fee was continuing to "dip" since the last time it released figures.

Bioware and Lucasarts' Star Wars: The Old Republic was launched in December, providing an alternative massively multiplayer online (MMO) experience.

In February, Frank Gibeau, President of Electronic Arts' labels, informed analysts that the title had attracted more than 1.7 million active players. The average gaming session is of four hours a day.

Blizzard began offering 20 free WoW level last year. Mr. Lagrave said that the idea of an extension of the trial is "on the table".

He said that he expects a rebound in player numbers when the expansion pack becomes available. The Mists of Panderia update, the release date of which is unknown, will allow players to explore the "lost planet" that is home to pandas who are adept in martial arts.

The company also announced that they have renegotiated its partnership with Neteasein China, ensuring that WoW will continue to be marketed on the mainland.

Streaming solutions

While Blizzard ponders a mobile WoW release, other companies are attempting to step into the breach.

Vancouver-based Gamestring announced in December 2010 that it was working to run the game on Android-based devices.

It displayed an early "alpha" version of a hack that allowed it to run on an HTC smartphone through streaming data from its servers and using a custom touchscreen interface.

Users have also uploaded videos on YouTube showing the game running on tablets via remote desktop apps.

However, such solutions create the issue of lag and are harder to manage than a PC.
