'Minecraft' Tops 100 million Sales

The Minecraft giant shows no signs of slowing down. The game's developer Mojang today announced that Minecraft has sold 100 million copies across all platforms including Macs, PCs, consoles, and mobile. Since the beginning of the year, roughly 53,000 copies of the game have been sold every day across the globe. The game keeps players hooked too -- more than 40 million players play in a Minecraft world every month to tinker around with a blocky shovel, axe, and sword. Apart from Tetris, few games have even come close to achieving the 100 million number.

Much of the success can be attributed to the game's open structure and limitless potential. As long as the geometry facing outwards of the game is made up of simple, colorful blocks, players are able to create anything they want. Many players continue to play for years despite their age. Mojang has provided the game by releasing regular updates that have included new mechanics, creatures and even materials. Its flexibility has made it a huge hit in the classroom and can be used to teach geology, art, and coding.


When Microsoft acquired Mojang about two years ago, many wondered what it planned to do with the game. Is there a sequel? A type of exclusive access to Xbox, Windows Phone and PC? In fact, none of that has been realized. Minecraft is accessible on more platforms than ever before, and there's been no announcement of a Minecraft 2.' Instead, we've seen an HoloLens version of the game as well as a spin-off adventure series by Telltale Games and an acquisition of MinecraftEdu that will result in a brand new version that is focused on education. Minecraft. Soon, there will be a Minecraft version specifically for China as well.


Minecraft's popularity is not waning. The strength of Minecraft isn't its finite story or its stunning graphics. It has a seemingly timeless appeal that attracts new youngsters as they grow old enough to play it. Minecraft will continue to sell in remarkable numbers as long as this continues.
