Microsoft is Bringing 'Minecraft' to The Oculus Rift

Minecraft is a delightful and extremely successful game but nobody would suggest its success is dependent on real-world accuracy. While the game's graphics are brimming with sharp right angles and huge "pixels", they still have a lot of charm and a distinctive visual style. It turns out Minecraft's vast open-world environment makes it a great game for virtual reality. Microsoft has already demonstrated the game in HoloLens and it's now available for Oculus Rift. I had the chance to see how the game functions with the Rift at Microsoft's spring showcase last week- and despite the game's simple design, it's likely to be one of the best overall VR experiences on the market.

It's important to remember that this isn't the latest Minecraft version. MINECRAFT SERVERS It has been updated to work with Oculus Rift. You can play in survival mode or join a multiplayer servers. When you begin playing, you're presented with two different views. The first places you in a castle-like setting with the game running on what amounts of a TV screen in front of you. It's quite a meta experience and amusing to play a game inside of the virtual reality experience but it's not an excellent way to see things if you need a break from the full VR experience.

You can dive into the full experience and feel completely immersed in what your character is seeing. Because of the massive scope of Minecraft's vast 3D environments it really feels like you've been transported away from reality, despite the humongous pixels and lack of fine details. It's one the most immersive VR experiences I have had. In fact, that lack of detail assists in helping Minecraft succeed -The game doesn't try to replicate reality. It felt more like I was in an animated cartoon.

The demo experience Microsoft showed off went through a few of the most memorable moments of the game -- I did some mining and battled some creeps. I also lit up some caves using torches, hit a bunch of buttons to interact with the environment and finally rode a mining cart up the side of a huge building. It was the most exciting part of the demo because I felt a real feeling of speed and height as I rocketed skyward. Then, a mine car ride let me look around 360 degrees from high up as it headed towards a new area. There was plenty of entertainment and eye candy on the journey.

It's hard to describe the experience in words since VR is so immersive. It's not a hugely different version of the game than the HoloLens experience, mostly due to the fact that the Oculus version doesn't have gesture and voice commands, however it still seems like an ideal place for exploring. Although there is no information about when Minecraft will be available in VR however, it is anticipated that it won't be long after Rift's launch later in the month. While "killer app" might seem to be a bit quaint, Minecraft has the potential of being an important player in the rapidly growing VR scene.
