IPhone Minecraft Client Posted, Pulled
If you keep a close watch on the App Store (or have an RSS feed following it) you may have noticed an app called Minecrafted there on Monday morning. S GAMES It's a Minecraft client for iOS which is a version of the wildly popular indie game that can be run on an iPhone, and connect up to real Minecraft servers. However, before you download it, it's not that quickly -- the app has been pulled from the App Store already, and if you try to locate it on the US store, you'll get an error message.
What's the matter? TUAW approached the creator of the app, Trevor Wilkin, and Wilkin explained to us that his original plan was to develop the client, then submit it to Apple and then obtain official approval from the makers of Minecraft before putting it live. Apple removed it from the market right away, however, and Wilkin says he "pretty was a bit shocked and removed from sale as quickly as he could." He doesn't know whether the app is legitimate or not -- it's all original code according to the description, but presumably he backwards engineered some of the elements, since it's compatible with current servers and versions of the game.
Wilkin sounds innocent enough to us. Wilkin claims he doesn't wish to harm the brand, but he just wanted to offer an efficient tool. I still hope to work out a solution that doesn't step on anyone's toes." We'd like to think that too. having Minecraft running on a regular basis on iOS is a great benefit for iPhone owners and those who love the incredibly popular game.
