How To Set Up A Shared Server In Minecraft

Minecraft has solidified its legacy with gamers by creating a game-world that encourages creation. Minecraft is a great game because it allows you to play with other people in a shared environment. Although hosting your own server can be a hassle, anyone can set up a Minecraft server with a Windows computer and an internet connection.

There will be some code changes and downloads required to set up your server. This guide will show you how to set up and fine tune a Minecraft server in no time.

Minecraft Server Setup

Any Minecraft Server needs the latest version of Java, so make sure you have the latest version of Java 7 installed. Once finished, download Minecraft Server.exe from Minecraft.net and save it into a dedicated folder, like C:\MinecraftSharedServer.

Run the server program. It will open an interface window. Once the "Preparing to spawn area” messages are completed, a line will appear that says "Done". Enter "stop", and hit the Enter key. Your new Minecraft world is created. Now it's time to configure it.

Minecraft Server Settings

You should see two files named "server" in the directory where you saved Minecraft_Server.exe. Minecraft names One of these files will be listed under the properties file. To open this file in Notepad, right-click it and choose Edit. You'll see a listing of server settings followed with an equal sign and a number. You can change many things about Minecraft by changing the values. You should be able to modify most of the default values, but you might like to change a few.

Gamemode – This setting allows you to select the type of world that you and your friends prefer. The default is 0, which is the basic survival mode. You can change this value to 1, which will switch your server to creative mode. Difficulty-Difficulty is clearly named. The values can be changed from 0 (peaceful) to 3 (hard) depending on what you wish to play on. White-list: This is to prevent others from accessing your server. This is important if your goal is to keep your server private between friends. Back in your Minecraft server folder, you'll see another file called white-list, right-click it and open the file with Notepad to make your white-list username list. You will be the first player to add. Type your Minecraft username in the top line. Hit enter to add the usernames of your friends on their own lines. Save the file and you've done it.

Configuring Your Router For Minecraft

Any player connected directly to your router should be able to view your server over the internet. If your friends are playing from their home, you will need to configure the router to forward port 25575 (TCP), to the server. This is a time-consuming step that requires some knowledge but only takes a few moments.

Once you have everything set up to receive external connections, start your server again by running Minecraft_Server.exe. If you don’t know what your IP is, you can search Google "what my ip". This is the IP address used by other players to connect to your server.

That's it. You have created a community for you and your friend to enjoy. Be sure to keep an eye on the Minecraft site for any updates and enjoy your time building together.
